Everyday I learn something new about landscaping and teaching people about the art in which they are surrounded and the beauty of South Florida landscape is a magical concept. Two weeks ago, Tim McKernan, head designer at Reef Tropical Landscape, taught a workshop on a Saturday at FIU's certificate program. The course provides core horticultural information appropriate for employees and owners of landscape nurseries, landscape maintenance businesses, botanical gardens, farms, parks and golf courses.

Working and living in South Florida in places like Miami, Key Largo, Tavernier, Islamorada, etc. is a true blessing. Obviously, the goal is to find something you love that can provide you with a living. Not as easy as it sounds but important. If you find it then..... BINGO, you have a tropical paradise in your back yard and activities in the sun all year round. Being from Philadelphia, especially this time of year, I have grown to love South Florida.

Talk about quality of life and horticulture, you hit the jackpot when you study a trade like landscape architecture. Landscape architecture and landscape design is a professional career with wonderful people doing something they love. It is a friendly, hard working group driven by a passion for design and landscape. The landscaping industry and working for a landscape company is certainly competitive but if you can create a niche and continue with landscaping education, there is potential for success.
